Regardless of your career and academic goals, an undergraduate degree in psychology from one of Mississippi’s many accredited universities is an excellent beginning step. Alcorn State University
The School of Education and Psychology
Alcorn State University is a public coed Liberal Arts College located in Norman. The school was founded in 1871 by the Reconstruction Era Legislation. It’s a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Offering more than 50 fields of study, the university enrolls over 3000 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students in its seven schools, including:

The missionis to “prepare graduates who will be well-rounded future leaders of high character who will be competitive in the global marketplace of the 21st century”. In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Alcorn State University as the 68th Best Southern Regional University. The School of Education and Psychology offers a non-teaching degree in psychology for students who plan to pursue graduate studies in psychology and related fields. The Department provides core curricular required courses for undergraduate majors in elementary education, general studies, and psychology.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The BS in Psychology degree program is for students who want to pursue graduate studies in psychology or related fields. Curriculum for the program is focused on the application of:
- psychological principles of behavior
- learning
- personality
It’s a non-teaching degree. Coursework provides students with a core foundation in child and adolescent psychology, as well as topics including:
- psychological testing
- juvenile delinquency
- abnormal psychology
- community mental health
The department also provides psychology service courses for teacher education majors and other majors. The BS in Psychology requires 124 credits for completion.

Belhaven University
The Division of Ministry and Human Services
Founded in 1883 by Dr. Lewis Fitzhugh, Belhaven College is a private coed Christian Liberal Arts College. It’s located in Jackson. Belhaven awards 27 bachelor’s degrees and eight master’s degrees in traditional majors. It also offers pre-professional programs in:

Belhaven also has satellite campuses for graduate and undergraduate programs in Atlanta, Memphis, Houston and Orlando as well as online programs. Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The BS in Psychology degree program offers a curriculum that introduces students to the study of human behavior and mental processes within a Christian context. The psychology major provides coursework in the foundation of major subfields of psychology to prepare students for future study and work in the field of psychology. Focus for the program is to develop their abilities to understand psychology and to apply it in their everyday lives. The program incorporates biblical worldview into coursework and class discussion. To earn the Bachelor of Science in Psychology students are required to complete an on-site research or clinical practicum. Previous locations for a practicum include:

Founded in 1873 by Mark Perrin Lowrey, Blue Mountain College is a private coed liberal art college affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention. The College is located on Blue Mountain, in the hills of North Mississippi. In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Blue Mountain College as the 22nd best Southern Regional College. Enrollment is about 500.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology
Curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Psychology program covers a vast amount of topics and has something for everyone. The major in Psychology is available on campus or through distance learning and requires 120 credits for completion. Goals for Psychology majors include the following:
- Develop a worldview integrating accumulated knowledge in psychology with other disciplines and the Christian faith
- Apply and relate skills and knowledge to problems and opportunities in contemporary society

To accomplish these goals, the major is rooted in a liberal arts program with a commitment to mainstream scientific psychology. Seniors are required to participate in a capstone course along with various internship opportunities. This gives students the chance to relate psychological knowledge to other fields of study. This opportunity allows students to relate psychological knowledge to the growth and enrichment of oneself. The major in psychology is available on campus or through distance learning.

Coahoma Community College
The Department of Social Science, Education, and Psychology
Coahoma County Agricultural High School was established in 1924 as the first agricultural high school in Mississippi under the existing “separate but equal” doctrine. The school became a Junior College in 1949, and the name of the institution was changed to Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School. The College is located about four miles north of Clarksdale near the Mississippi River.
Coahoma Community College offers:

Classes are offered in an online format and in a traditional classroom format. There are also extension sites in neighboring Bolivar, Coahoma, Tallahatchie, Tunica and Quitman counties. Copiah-Lincoln Community College
Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin) is a coed public community college with its main campus in Wesson. Co-Lin was founded in 1928. Current student undergraduate enrollment is about 5,000 students. Co-Lin sponsors six men’s sports including:

The Wolfpack varsity teams compete in NJCAA Region 23 that include Mississippi and Louisiana. The baseball, golf and softball teams participate in Division II. All other sports, except football, play in Division I.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology curriculum is for students who want to work toward a Bachelor of Arts while majoring in Psychology. Students pursuing a BA, as opposed to the BS, will be required to complete coursework in a foreign language. Those who want to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology are required to complete additional courses in math and science. The BS degree is a good fit for students who plan to pursue graduate training in psychology or a related field.
