Bachelor’s in Psychology Degree Programs in Missouri – S-U

The state of Missouri hosts a large number of colleges and universities offering undergraduate psychology degrees. Throughout these various programs, there are many variations on how, where and when you can earn your degree. In the past, college courses were offered on-campus on a daytime basis. As years passed, more and more programs began to offer night classes to accommodate returning students.  In addition to traditional daytime classes and night courses, students can earn their degree through online, a combination of online and on-campus, part-time and weekend degree programs. Having a career, a family and a busy schedule does not mean that a college degree is impossible. Each student, despite their personal needs, can find a degree program that fits into their life.

Saint Louis University-Main Campus

Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is a private coed Jesuit university and the second oldest Jesuit University in the United States. The university is also one of the 28 members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The 271-acre main campus is located in Saint Louis with an additional campus located in Madrid, Spain. The  university enrollment is about 13,000 students, representing all 50 states and 70 foreign countries. The mission of Saint Louis University is “pursuing truth for the greater glory of God and for the service of humanity.”

In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Saint Louis University as the 96th Best National University.

Bachelor of Arts/Science in Psychology

The undergraduate psychology program at Saint Louis University offers students the option to pursue a BA, a BS and a minor in psychology. The psychology major develops students’ core understanding of:

  • evidence-based reasoning
  • quantitative thinking
  • psychological inquiry

Psychology majors study human behavior, including:

  • the influences of biological factors
  • developmental status
  • cognitive processes
  • social conditions

It also includes behavioral areas of study such as

  • cognitive neuroscience

  • applied psychology

The coursework includes hands-on research projects in capstone courses, and volunteering at human services sites through capstone practicum projects. Degree requirements for the program also include the following:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology requires completion of at least 31 credits in psychology
  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology requires completion of a minimum of 36 credits in psychology

Psychology majors are prepared for entry-level careers and to enter graduate school for careers in psychology where a PhD is needed.

Southeast Missouri State University

The College of Liberal Arts

Founded in 1873, Southeast Missouri State University is a public coed university, located in Cape Girardeau. Southeast Missouri offers students the choice over 200 areas of study including undergraduate, master’s degrees and a cooperative EdD program offered in conjunction with the University of Missouri.

The undergraduate enrollment is nearly 11,000 students on the main campus. In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Southeast Missouri State University as the 92nd best Midwestern Regional University. The University’s mission is to “provide professional education grounded in the liberal arts and sciences”.

Bachelor of Arts/Science in Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Southeast Missouri offers students the option to pursue a BS or BA with a major in psychology. The program provides students with a study of core disciplines of psychology, the scientific study of all aspects of human behavior and mental processes. Students are prepared to enter graduate education and careers in human services. Some of the highlights of the program include the ability to:

The Bachelor of Arts with a Psychology Major requires completion of 54 credits and is offered in a completely online degree program format. The Bachelor of Science in Psychology program is not available in an online format.

Southwest Baptist University

The College of Education and Social Sciences

Founded in 1878, Southwest Baptist University is a private coed liberal arts university whose 152-acre main campus is located Bolivar. The university also has three other campuses  in Mountain View, Salem and Springfield Missouri. Southwest Baptist offers student 80 areas of study in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.

The mission is “providing students with a liberal arts education rooted in the Baptist faith, and to be a Christian centered academic community to prepare students for careers as servant leaders in a global society”. In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Southwest Baptist University as a Tier 2 university among Best Midwest Regional Universities. The College of Education and Social Sciences has a strong bachelor’s degree program in generalist psychology as well as an emphasis in Sports Performance Enhancement.

Bachelor of arts of Bachelor of Science in Psychology

Students can choose a BA or BS in Psychology. The curriculum for the major in Psychology studies disciplines of psychology and the behavioral and mental processes of individuals. Requirements for psychology major seeking a BA degree include two semesters of a foreign language and 36 credits of Psychology coursework. Students pursuing a BS in Psychology must complete 36 credits in Psychology as well as one of the following:

  • 8-9 hours of upper level sociology
  • 8-9 hours of upper level natural science
  • Complete the requirements for a minor within the department or complete the requirements for a second major in Sociology, Social Work or Criminal Justice

Students can also pursue a BA with a concentration in Sports Performance Enhancement. This option requires 41 credits with specific course requirements. Graduates of the psychology major are prepared to enter a variety of careers including:

Founded in 1833 as the Columbia Female Academy, Stephens College is the second oldest women’s college. It’s located in Columbia. Stephens offers students undergraduate, graduate, online and certificate programs throughout four schools:

Founded in 1867, Truman State University is a public coed liberal arts and sciences university located  in Kirksville. College of the Arts and Science

Founded in 1839, the University of Missouri (Mizzou) is a coed public university located in Columbia. Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Students at The College of Arts and Sciences have the option to pursue a BA or BS with a major in Psychology. The BA in Psychology is for students who want to study human behavior to pursue careers directly after graduation or as a preparation for applied psychology and other related graduate programs. Both programs have similar degree requirements and require a statistics course as well as 12-13 credits in a single foreign language.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The BS in Psychology degree prepares students with a science-based curriculum preparing them for further study in graduate programs that are science based, including:

  • neuroscience
  • quantitative psychology

These are helpful for entry into medical school or other health-related graduate programs. The BA and BS in Psychology have similar degree requirements and require a statistics course as well as 12-13 credits in a single foreign language. The BS requires completion of Statistics 2500 (Introduction to Probability & Statistics I) and an approved 12 to 13-credit science.

With so many choices, the time to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology is now. You can choose from daytime, evening, weekend, online and hybrid degree programs. Regardless of whether you work during the day or are raising children, you can still earn your degree. Perhaps, military service, a physical disability or limitation, family obligations or some other variable has kept you from working on your college diploma. That no longer has to be the case.
