Clark Atlanta University is a private, historically black university in Atlanta, Georgia. It was established in 1988 with the joining of Clark College and Atlanta University. Before the consolidation Atlanta University offered only graduate degrees and Clark Colleges offered only four-year undergraduate Liberal Arts Degrees. The consolidation allowed a more comprehensive educational experience. Clark Atlanta University is a member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The School of Arts and Sciences offers a variety of Liberal Arts degrees including African and African American Studies, Africana Women’s Studies, English, History, Psychology, Political Science and many more.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Department of Psychology prepares students who are planning to pursue professional careers in psychology, sociology, social work, and special education services. The Departmental goal is to train students so they have the ability to ask questions and think critically and to become independent investigators. In conjunction with the core curriculum students are required to compete an Internship Experience. This portion of the course work provides students an opportunity to work in a psychological setting in order to acquire practical experience in psychological work and a better understanding of human relations. Students cater their internship experience with a sponsoring agency and a member of the Psychology faculty.

Columbus State University

The College of Letters and Sciences

Columbus State University (CSU) is a public university located in Columbus, Georgia. The school was established as Columbus College in 1958. The university is administered by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. In 2014, US News and World Report ranked Columbus State as the 92nd best university in the Southern Region of the United States. The College of Letters and Sciences is considered the “academic heart” of Columbus State University, offering undergraduate degree programs in the sciences, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences. Students graduating from the college have gone on to pursue careers in diverse fields such as law, education, medicine, engineering, scientific research, and criminal justice. Upon graduation students are also prepared for graduate studies.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The Psychology Department at CSU offers a curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Some students pursue this degree path in order to participate in CSU’s pre-medical program for application to medical school. The faculty members have diverse research and clinical areas of expertise, including clinical, cognitive, developmental, social, personality, biological, and behavior analysis. The curriculum includes scientific, theoretical, and applied clinical approaches. Students in this program also have opportunities to explore specialty areas within the discipline. Students planning on pursuing a graduate degree in psychology have the opportunity to complete internships and independent study opportunities. The psychology department has its own research labs and clinical facilities to further enhance the learning experience.

Covenant College

The Department of Psychology

Covenant College is a Christian Liberal Arts college in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Covenant offers a strong Liberal Arts education from a Reformed Christian perspective. The focus of the college is found in its motto, “In All Things…Christ Preeminent.” The purpose of the schools mission is to “ground excellence in academic inquiry in a biblically grounded frame of reference”. Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Students in the psychology department must fulfill two sets of requirements. The first are the general education requirements and the second are the major requirements.

The goals of the psychology department for general education students are:

  • To instill in students an appreciation and respect for studying God’s highest creation.
  • To expose students to the diversity of behavior, research, theories, and applications in the field of psychology.
  • To promote in students a quality of discernment with respect to the claims about what is known in psychology today.

For students majoring in psychology, the goals of the psychology department are:

Emmanuel College

The Department of Social Sciences

Emmanuel College is a private, Christian, liberal arts college located in Franklin Springs, Georgia. Emmanuel is affiliated with the International Pentecostal Holiness Church and annual enrollment averages between 700 to 800 students. In 2014 US News and World Report ranked Emmanuel as the 57th best university in Southern Region of the United States. The Social Science Department offers preparation for careers in education, criminal justice, history, pre-law, psychology, counseling, social work, sociology, political science, and geography. The dedicated faculty members in the Department work closely with students to help each student plan an academic program that will lead to challenging and rewarding work. All classes in the Department of Social Science are approached from a Christ-centered worldview and offer instruction from many different modes of thinking. In addition to the traditional lecture format, educational offerings also come in the form of seminars, discussion-centered instruction, laboratory instruction, projects, observations, and directed studies.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The purpose of the Psychology program at Emmanuel is to offer students a broad-based knowledge of the foundation of psychology as an empirical science. A wide range of topics are covered including the bio-psychosocial process, the application of psychological principles to professional practice, and the experiential and theoretical integration of psychology and Christianity. Students completing the undergraduate psychology degree will have the preparation necessary to pursue graduate level programs in psychology, counseling, or social work. The major difference in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) curriculum is the foreign language requirement.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

Much of the same curriculum is covered in the Bachelor of Science (BS) program. Students are introduced to the theoretical framework of psychology as well as many contemporary topics within the field of psychology. The biggest distinction in the BS program is the focus on the scientific and mathematical elements of psychology. A stronger focus is placed on science, statistics, research and the scientific process. Students will omit the foreign language requirement associated with the BA degree and instead complete natural science and mathematics courses.

Emory University

Name of College or school

Emory University is a private research university in metropolitan Atlanta, located in the Druid Hills section of DeKalb County, Georgia. The university was originally founded as Emory College in 1836 in Oxford, Georgia by a group of Methodists. The growing school was given a land grant by Asa Candler (the president of The Coca-Cola Company) in 1915 which allowed the small college to move to metropolitan Atlanta and become rechartered as Emory University. The university’s mission statement is “to create, preserve, teach, and apply knowledge in the service of humanity.” The university employs almost 3,000 faculty members with a range of awards and honors including the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, National Humanities Medal, Guggenheim Fellowship, Fulbright Fellowship, and membership in the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) offered by the Department of Psychology emphasizes the empirical study of behavior. The curriculum exposes students to a well-balanced curriculum in experimental, psychobiological, social/personality/clinical, and cognitive/developmental areas. In order to complete the Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology students must successfully complete twelve courses in Psychology in addition to the Liberal Arts curriculum requirement.

Joint Degree – Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Linguistics

The joint Psychology and Linguistics major was created to introduce students to fundamental aspects of the behavioral study of language. The curriculum focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to language from the psychological and linguistic perspectives evaluating language usage. The major is designed to offer students introductory breadth in the study of both psychology and linguistics while also focusing on the study of language and cognition. After gaining the basic information of the subject matter from each discipline, students can choose from elective courses focusing on specific issues in language and cognition. Students seeking this dual degree will complete a semester of Directed Study where they will engage in a supervised research project on a particular topic within the realm of language and cognition.

Joint Degree – Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology

The Department of Psychology participates in the interdisciplinary program in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology (NBB). This multi-departmental undergraduate program offers a Bachelor of Science that combines the expertise and commitment of a large and diverse group of faculty from many departments. The NBB major program combines the study of behavioral biology with the study of how the nervous system controls body functions and cognition. The major represents an innovative interdisciplinary culmination of the fields of Neuroscience and Behavior and provides a breadth and focus not found in traditional Biology, Psychology, Biopsychology, Neuroscience, or Anthropology programs.
