Due to the continually growing interest in psychology degrees in the state of Georgia, more and more colleges and universities are offering undergraduate degrees in Psychology. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics 2014 Occupational Handbook shows that the field of psychology is expected to grow at a rate of at least 12 percent between now and 2022. Spelman College

Name of College or school

Spelman College is a four-year Liberal Arts all-female college located in Atlanta. The school is a member of the Atlanta University Center academic consortium in Atlanta. It was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary. Spelman was the fourth historically black female institution of higher education to receive its collegiate charter (1924). The school is one of America’s oldest and most highly regarded historically black colleges for women. In 2014, US News & World Report ranked Spelman as the 65th best National Liberal Arts College. The school was also ranked as the #1 Historically Black College or University and the 11th best school for Undergraduate Teaching. The mission of the Spelman College Department of Psychology is “to prepare students for the study and service of psychology”. The goal of the department is to empower students to be leaders and institute positive change in society. This is done by training them in the ethical, systematic study of behavior and mental processes, as well as the application of psychology to societal and global issues.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Students enrolled in the undergraduate psychology major are exposed to many areas of research, study and application of the field of psychology. Upon graduation from the program students should be able to understand and
 demonstrate:

  1. Knowledge of theories and principles in the discipline,
including those related to the African American experience and the experience of women
  2. The scientific method
  3. How the theories and principles of psychology may be applied to individual, societal and global issues
  4. Facility in communicative (oral, reading, writing and listening), research (quantitative and qualitative) and critical thinking skills
  5. Ethical standards and practices within the discipline
  6. Relevant applications of technology
  7. Competencies required for entry into graduate or professional school, or for entry into the world of work

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Mental Health Concentration

The faculty at the Department of Psychology has created a field-intensive concentration in mental health to support psychology majors in both the knowledge gained in coursework as well as the:

  • development of skills
  • field experience
  • job development and eventual employment

The goal of this program is to increase students’ attractiveness for entry-level positions as well as for admission to graduate programs.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Neuroscience Concentration

The specialty field of Neuroscience is among the fastest growing academic areas in the country. It has a  multidisciplinary approach to investigating issues regarding the relationship between the brain with the mind and body. The curriculum examines how the brain functions in relation to normal behavior, and how disruptions in the brain influence behavior in the form of mental or physical disorders. 

The Department of Psychology’s curriculum spans several disciplines, including:

  • psychology
  • neurobiology
  • chemistry
  • genetics
  • mathematics

The concentration in neuroscience teaches students about the methods and application used to study the nervous system, and the involved relationship between the mind and body.

Thomas University

The Department of Psychology

Thomas University is a private, four-year, coeducational university located in Thomasville. The University offers Associate, Bachelor, and Master’s level degrees to both traditional and non-traditional students. The overall academic emphasis found in all programs is on professional career development, with undergraduate and graduate programs in:

The Department of Psychology at Thomas offers students the option of earning their Bachelor’s Degree online, on campus or a hybrid of the two.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The BS in Psychology degree can be earned in a campus-based program, a fully online program or a hybrid. The Mission of the undergraduate program in Psychology is “to prepare students for a wide range of career options in human services, administration, criminal justice, health, business, and education”. The Psychology department has two student organizations:

  • Psi Chi is the Thomas University chapter of the National Honor Society in Psychology
  • the Psych Club enhances a community spirit among the Psychology majors.

Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Science

The Thomas University undergraduate Rehabilitation Studies degree prepares students “to provide rehabilitation services in public and private agencies to persons with various disabilities”. This degree program is offered fully online (with a required internship). Students will be adequately prepared to gain Advanced Standing status in the TU Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s program. Students can choose from one of the areas of concentration, including:

School to Work Transitions – This concentration prepares graduates to help people access the workforce once the person with a disability leaves their school setting. Persons completing this concentration will be able to work in a variety of settings and in jobs such as case managers, case coordinators, job coaches, and/or direct care.
Addictions – This concentration prepares graduates to work with people who are struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. Students completing this concentration can take the state examination for an Associate Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor after graduation.
Gerontology – This concentration prepares graduates to work in agencies that focus on people who are in their older adult years. Graduates will understand the issues related to the changing roles and responsibilities of older adults and have increased skills to work with the elderly population. Students can earn a certificate in Gerontology.
Criminal justice – This concentration will provide graduates with skills in both rehabilitation and criminal justice.  They will be able to pursue jobs as:

  • probation officers
  • security
  • guardian ad litem and with social services agencies.

The BA in Counseling Psychology degree program prepares students for service in the community, the church and the family through the ministry of counseling. The Counseling Psychology Department integrates the models of psychology and the skills of counseling in the principles of Biblical Scripture. It then integrates them into real-world application. The program emphasizes that graduates must find ways to integrate faith into the workplace and that this challenge is especially relevant for those in the counseling profession. The faculty represents varied disciplines with years of counseling and teaching experience in a variety of settings. The disciplines include:

  • a Pastoral Counselor
  • two Licensed Professional Counselors, one of whom specializes in Human Sexuality and Gender Identity issues.

The College of Arts and Letters
