The state of Indiana is home to a large number of fully accredited, widely respected Undergraduate Psychology Degree Programs. With more and more programs becoming available a growing number of people can now access a college education. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) was founded in 1840 by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the Sisters of Providence. It’s the oldest, private, four year Catholic liberal arts College for women in the country. SMWC is a pioneer in women’s and distance education. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 649. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s ranked 16th for Midwest Regional colleges in the 2015 edition of Best Colleges. The College Mission is “educating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. Student life complements academic life by providing an atmosphere for learning to live, understand and contribute to a community made up of people from different backgrounds. The atmosphere here encourages freedom, tolerance and responsibility”. The college has over 40 years of experience in distance online education. It gives women and men from all areas of the world an opportunity in pursuing their career goals, while balancing professional and personal responsibilities.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology gives students the flexibility of a traditional on campus program or can be completed through online classes as part of the distance education program. Students in this program are able to utilize acquired knowledge through curriculum about the human mind. It gives students the ability to collect, analyze and interpret data from a logical, problem-solving perspective. Students are required to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours to complete the BS in Psychology at SMWC. In addition to the core courses and electives required, the psychology major requires 43 credit hours of psychology-focused coursework. Graduates will enter careers in a variety of settings including:
- youth service agencies
- mental health centers
- substance abuse programs
- Mental health caseworker
- Social agency caseworker
- Consultant to other professionals including lawyers, educators, physicians, engineers, managers and policy makers
Future areas of potential employment for BS in Psychology graduates can include:
- Laboratories
- Hospitals
- Courtrooms
- Schools and colleges
- Prisons
- Corporate offices
- Counseling centers
- Recreational centers.
The program also provides preparation for those students who wish to pursue graduate degrees.
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
The Saint Mary of the Woods BA in Psychology Degree Program focuses on the sociological and environmental areas of psychology and emphasizes coursework in the humanities. Students are required to fulfill designated foreign language credits to complete the program. Students graduating with a BA in Psychology are prepared to pursue careers in:
- education
- counseling
- social work
- human resources
- journalism
Additionally, students pursuing postsecondary degrees may be looking to continue on with direct client-patient contact as:

Taylor University
Psychology Department
Taylor University is a private Christian college located in Upland, Indiana, about 90 minutes north of Indianapolis. Founded in 1846, it is one of the oldest evangelical Christian colleges in America. Academics at Taylor are divided into three schools:
- The School of Natural and Applied Sciences
- The School of Humanities, Arts and Biblical Studies
- The School of Social Sciences, Education and Business
The school mission and unique qualities (as provided by the university) include: “Taylor University is a vibrant community of scholarship and Christian faith characterized by relentless discovery, intentional community and global engagement.” Some of the high points about this small university include:
- Taylor University ranked 1st for Midwest Regional Colleges in the 2015 edition of Best Colleges
- Ministry outreach, Bible studies and accountability groups are important parts of community life at Taylor
- It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 2,146
- The school recently opened the new 137,000 square foot Euler Science Complex in 2012

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Taylor University’s Psychology Department is one of the largest majors at Taylor and provides the integration of Psychology and Christianity through its faculty. Taylor’s Psychology major integrates the study of the human mind in combination with a basis in the Christian faith. A practicum or research project is required. Students are required to complete four courses in one language option for the Bachelor of Art. There are also 128 minimum hours and 42 minimum upper-division hours required. The program is based on professional growth and hands-on education. Taylor applies the following approaches to this:
- Practicum experience. Students are required to participate in a practicum associated with psychology in settings that may include a hospital, clinic or camp
- Research experience. All students get the change to work with a professor and a small team on a research project
- Intercultural experience
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology program is based on professional growth and hands-on education with three approaches:
- Practicum experience. Students are required to participate in a practicum associated with psychology
- Research experience. Students have the opportunity to work with a professor and a small team on a research project
- Intercultural experience. Students can travel to various locations for field experience. In the past students have traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to study those with HIV/AIDS, while other students have traveled to the Bahamas to study leadership and mental health. Other trips have included South Africa for projects associated with peace and reconciliation, or to the inter-city community to study the needs in education.
There is a requirement of 28 minimum hours and 42 minimum upper-division hours. Core Courses include:
- Introductory Psychology
- Foundations and Applications of Psychology
- Introduction to Research Methods and Data Analysis Career
- Vocational Issues Seminar Integration of Psychology and Christianity.

Jannen School of the Arts and Sciences
Trine University, founded in 1884, is a private comprehensive institution offering degrees in over 35 academic programs through six schools. Trine’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology is one of the most in demand majors, offering a solid education through diverse course offerings, covering:

Many psychology students choose to double major in criminal justice, one of the nation’s fastest growing job fields. Objectives of the program include:

Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The Bachelor of Science in Psychology program (180-quarter credit hours) is for students interested in studying human behavior. Specialization area options available in the BS in Psychology program include:
- Child development provides study of behavioral development from birth to adolescence. It prepares students for careers in early childhood education, human services, and community work.
- Applied behavior analysis provides coursework in the design, analysis, and application of learning theories and behavioral principles. Careers include working with children and adults in a school or other organizational settings.
- Industrial/organizational psychology. This gives students skills and knowledge in psychology of behavior and attitudes. Graduates find careers working to improve the performance, satisfaction, and well-being of employees by applying psychology-related strategies in various work settings.
- Addictions for understanding of substance abuse in our society This includes risk factors, prevention, evaluation, and treatment. Careers are in clinical and educational settings.
