Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology degree includes all of the requirements of the BA degree, with an additional six credits of science courses, as well as an additional 12 credits of research courses in Psychology. Student Competencies include the ability to:

  • Differentiate the value of primary research literature in psychology compared to popular media reports
  • Understand and perform statistical analyses to generate an original research hypothesis

The Department of Psychology

Founded in 1838, Westfield State was the first co-educational college in America to offer an education without barrier to race, creed, or economic status. With 31 undergraduate majors, 34 minors and 43 different concentrations – the Westfield State University mission is to” fosters intellectual curiosity, encourages critical thinking, inspires civic engagement, and promotes a global perspective and to develop the knowledge, skills, and character essential for students to reach their full potential and become responsible leaders in society”. In 2016, US News and World Report ranked Westfield State University as the 116th best Regional Northern Universities. The current undergraduate enrollment is 5,590 students and the campus size is 256 acres. The Department of Psychology prepares students to either continue their education in graduate school, or immediately enter the workforce.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program provides students with a framework for understanding human behavior and the world around them. Coursework provides a study of the biological bases of behavior, the nature of personality, how people think, how emotions are expressed, how and why people behave differently in groups and about the differences between normal and abnormal behavior. Curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts Program is designed to allow students to experience a core liberal arts curriculum and also a study of General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Experimental Statistics, Principles of Learning, Tests & Measurements and Experimental Methods. Combining a framework in the theoretical principles of psychology and exposure to research and experimental design students are prepared for careers in a variety of areas of psychology as well as entry into a graduate program.

The Department of Psychology

Founded in 1834 as a female seminary, Wheaton College, a private liberal arts college is located in Norton, Massachusetts. The school began admitting men in 1988, after more than 150 years as a female-only institution. Students have the opportunity to choose from about 40 majors and more than 100 student-run clubs and organizations. William James College, originally known as the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, is a graduate coeducational college of psychology located in Newton.
