Despite Minnesota’s perceived remoteness, residents interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology have several programs to choose from. With a range of on-campus and online options, students have the flexibility to choose a program that suits their needs. The universities that offer these undergraduate programs allow students to choose whether they want to work towards a bachelor of science or a bachelor of arts. Students can also choose whether a degree in general psychology or choosing a specialty area is the right choice.
Concordia University – Saint Paul Campus
Psychology Department
Affiliated with the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church, Concordia University (St. Paul) is a private coed Christian university founded in 1893. The university grants 80 majors and minors including:

The Golden Bears participate in NCAA Division II and are part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competing in 15 men and women’s sports. Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The major in psychology involves the study of the way humans and animals act, feel, think and learn. Curriculum includes:
- the way that personality and social development are influenced
- the relationship between mind and body
- how statistical principles can be used in analyzing social science data
Students develop skills in scientific thinking to understand human thought, behavior and interaction. The Bachelor of Arts requires 44 credit hours for completion of the Psychology Major. The Bachelor of Science degree requires 79 credits for the major with additional coursework required in mathematics, chemistry or biology.
Students are required to participate in a 12-credit internship in counseling settings such as youth residential treatment programs and adoption placement agencies. Students can participate in the Psychology Club as well as research presentations at the Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference.
Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in:

- social services
- business
- community education
- forensic psychology
- human resources
- residential treatment or other related fields
. Graduates are also prepared for entry into graduate programs.

Crossroads College
The Division of Arts and Sciences
Crossroads College, formerly Minnesota Bible College, is a four-year, coeducational Christian college located in Rochester. Crossroads is a nondenominational school with students from a variety of Christian Denominations. The college awards associate and bachelor’s level degrees through three academic divisions:

The Bachelor Degree in Counseling Psychology provides students with an exploration of Counseling with a Christian view in order. Students gain a core understanding of human psychology development. They also get a solid foundation in skills required to assist others in their psychological needs. The focus of the program is primarily on church ministry. Competencies for graduates of the Counseling Psychology Major are the ability to:
- Integrate the biblical view of personhood and the relationship that Christianity has to the counseling process
- Show an in-depth knowledge at an undergraduate level of basic theory and techniques of counseling
- Exhibit recognition and awareness of the needs of others
- Show basic understanding of the issues related to counseling
- Demonstrate a core foundation of psychological and statistical research methods
- Show an in-depth understanding of psychopathology and psychotherapy
- Utilize and show the insight, skills, and experiences gained from an Internship in Counseling

Founded in 1916, Crown College is a private Christian College located in Saint Bonifacius, a suburb of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro. The BA Psychology major prepares students with the knowledge and skills in psychology and counseling to succeed in future employment or ministry. The academically rigorous psychology program combines faith and learning. Students acquire the knowledge, skills and ethics necessary for Christian leadership and professional success. The program is designed as a liberal arts degree with a common core of required classes in the major. There are additional electives appropriate to their educational and vocational goals. The BA in Psychology program is available in a traditional in classroom program as well as an online program of study.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Christian Counseling Degree
The BS in Psychology – Christian Counseling Degree is available as an online only program. It’s one of only a few undergraduate psychology degrees in the country completely online and Christ-centered. Crown’s BS in Psychology counseling program includes a solid foundation in psychological theory within a Christian perspective.
The degree program is distinctive in that it also offers skills-based counseling training from a Christian perspective. The knowledge and skills that students acquire through the counseling concentration are applicable to almost any career.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a private residential liberal arts college that is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The major in psychological science provides a methodology allowing students to analyze and synthesize propositions about behavior. The psychology major introduces students to a study of behavior in humans and other organisms. It examines the theoretical approaches used to organize and explain these observations. The program goal is to provide students with a basic understanding of the scientific approach in explaining behavior and mental processes.

Hamline University is a private coed liberal arts college located in Saint Paul. Founded in 1854, Hamline is the oldest institution of higher learning in Minnesota. The university was named after Bishop Leonidas Lent Hamline of the United Methodist Church. It’s one of the five Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities.
