The many colleges and universities spread throughout Minnesota offer students many options to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Macalester College
The Psychology Department
Macalester College is a private coed College located 10-minutes from downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis, known as the Twin Cities. It was founded in 1874 as a Presbyterian affiliated college (however non-sectarian). Freshmen and sophomores must live on the Macalester campus. The undergraduate enrollment is 2,073 students.
Macalester College is widely known for its large international enrollment with one of the highest percentages of foreign students in the country. The mission is “commitment to being a preeminent liberal arts college with an educational program known for its high standards for scholarship and its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society”.
In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Macalester College as 23rd for Best National Liberal Arts Colleges. The Psychology Department is housed in the Olin-Rice Science Center and supports more than 80 majors and 15 minors.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
Curriculum for the BS in Psychology degree program gives students a core understanding of the scientific study of behavior and experience in humans and other animals. The program introduces students to the methods of investigation, conceptual analysis, and application of sub disciplines in psychology. Students develop a competency in specific theory and methods in Psychology. They gain an understanding of the context of psychological science, examining cultural, social, and political aspects.
The program prepares students to enter graduate programs complete with the skills and knowledge required to become:

The College of Health, Community and Professional Studies
Metropolitan State University, also known as Metro State, is a four-year public coed university located in the Twin Cities. It is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. In 2016, US News & World Report ranked Metropolitan State University as Tier 2 for Midwest Regional Universities. To meet the needs of working adults, Metropolitan State University schedules many classes in the evening and on weekends. It is possible for recent graduates of Minneapolis and St. Paul public high schools to attend Metro State tuition free. The College of Health, Community and Professional Studies offers students the opportunity to pursue learning and educational advancement in a number of health related professional programs.
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
All students must complete a minimum of 40 credits in psychology during the course of the BA program. Learning opportunities include:

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Psychology
Curriculum for a major in Psychology with Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science includes the study of social, physiological, developmental and environmental factors that influence thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The program teaches students methods used for psychological inquiry and findings in psychological research.
Students are prepared for careers in psychology related fields. The psychology major provides students a core foundation of study in several areas of psychology. Graduates of the Psychology major are prepared for future graduate study. The major in psychology also provides skills for those students who do not wish to pursue careers as professional psychologists. Students who are pursuing a BS are required additional coursework in math and science courses. The BA students must complete a foreign language requirement. The BA and BS in Psychology each require 120 credits for completion.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
The BA in Psychology program offers strong undergraduate preparation in the broad field of psychology. There is a science/research orientation included as a part of the psychology curriculum. Students may choose an area of emphasis preparation for graduate school or for work in the profession at the bachelor’s degree level. Students are required to complete college algebra or an equivalent to enter the psychology major.
To complete the BA degree in Psychology, students are required to meet the minimum university requirements and specific requirements for the program. Students must complete a minimum of 120 credits for the Liberal Arts and Sciences Core. Learning Competencies for the program include the following abilities:
- Demonstrate familiarity with major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology
- Understand and be able to apply basic research methods in psychology, to include:
- research design
- data analysis
- interpretation
- Utilize critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry and scientific approach in solving problems that relate to behavior and mental processes
- Understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues
- Evaluate evidence, act ethically, and reflect other values essential to psychology as a discipline
- Demonstrate information competence
- Effectively use computers and other technology
- Demonstrate effective writing skills in various formats (e.g., informing, defending, explaining, persuading, arguing, teaching).
- Identify, understand, and respect complexities of sociocultural and global diversity

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences
North Central University is a coed Christian, primarily residential college that is owned and operated by 11 Assemblies of God districts of the upper Midwest. The College, founded in 1930, is located in Minneapolis. North Central University has a total undergraduate enrollment of nearly 2,000 students on the 9-acre campus. The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences department provides students with a broad, theologically enlightened educational foundation in the behavioral sciences. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Psychology
General Electives for the BA Degree allow students to select 6-8 credits of the same foreign language. This may include Biblical Languages or American Sign Language. It requires 22-24 credits of general electives to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree or select 33 credits of general electives to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree. Students may use general electives toward meeting the program requirements for a major or minor.
The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences has set the following goals and outcomes for the Psychology major program:
- Have a fundamental knowledge of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and empirical findings. Use these to demonstrate how psychological principles are applicable to behavioral problems.
- Develop scientific reasoning and problem solving to include effective research methods focusing on theory use, design and executing of research plans
- Apply ethical standards in evaluating psychological science and practice, building interpersonal relationships.
- Demonstrate competence in writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Application of psychology-specific content and skills, effective self-reflection, project management skills, teamwork skills for career preparation or graduate school

- Describe various approaches to the relationship between psychology \and Christianity \ to show a commitment to psychology as a form of ministry
