Malone University

College of Theology, Arts & Sciences

Opened by Quaker leaders J. Walter and Emma Malone in 1892, Malone University is a private, nonprofit liberal arts institution affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends to educate more than 2,500 students from its 96-acre urban campus in Canton just 24 miles south of Akron. Crowned the 125th “Safest College Campus in America” on Niche, Malone is ranked the Midwest’s 69th best regional college, 12th top value, and 39th most veteran-friendly school by the U.S. News. College Choice also picked Malone as the 21st best Christian university nationwide. The College of Theology, Arts & Sciences instructs 50 percent of Malone students with seminar-style teaching in nine departments.

Psychology B.A.

The Psychology B.A. encourages Malone students to explore the mind’s inner workings by studying the connection between human behavior, emotion, and Christian faith. With a student-faculty ratio of 12:1, the program offers a supportive environment where theories and methods are tested to research God’s most mysterious creation. Professors lead students through team-based experiments that have been authored in publications like Journal of Psychology and Christianity. The Psych Lab features training with Sniffy, a virtual mouse simulator. Majors can attend the Applied and Scientific Psychology Camp during summers. The four-year sequence also leaves room for practicum at community agencies, such as the Stark County Crisis Center.

Pastoral Ministry B.A.

Undergraduates seeking a relevant alternative to bachelor’s in psychology degree programs in Ohio could pursue Malone’s Pastoral Ministry B.A. through the Theology Department. This 36-credit major develops upon a Biblical core to prepare students for Christian vocations that foster people’s spiritual and emotional growth. Required coursework will delve into hermeneutics, ministry leadership, Christian thought, pastoral care, evangelism, and discipleship. It’s one of the nation’s few undergraduate programs offering Hebrew courses. Students must complete a faith-based internship, which could be concentrated in pastoral counseling. B.A. majors can join the DOTS Club and participate in the Center for Christian Faith & Culture. Learning may continue into Malone’s accredited M.A.Ed. in Counseling program.

Liberal Arts B.A. with Psychology Concentration

One of Malone’s most unique programs is the Liberal Arts B.A. because it forgoes a traditional major for cross-disciplinary education from a Christian perspective. Students are admitted during their junior year after finishing 60 credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA. The upper-division curriculum then involves 45 liberal arts credits from three customized cognates. Learners can select any discipline that’s not deemed professional for a Bachelor of Science. Therefore, students may devote 15+ hours to psychology coursework. These courses would likely include abnormal psychology, research methods, social psychology, human development, and behavioral statistics. Liberal arts students are also welcomed into the Bliss Institute Internship program.
