Counseling and Psychology Degrees Offered at Florida International University
Florida International University boasts over 200 academic programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels within 11 schools and colleges as well as one Honors College which hosts well over 190-degree choices. The counseling and psychology degrees offered at FIU are housed within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education. Students can choose to obtain a B.A. in Psychology either on-campus or fully online. Otherwise, the majority of psychology and counseling offerings are heavily focused on masters and doctoral degrees. A psychology focus at Florida International University emphasizes and focuses on the scientific aspect of psychology by integrating rigorous research courses. The faculty and staff take notice of social trends that can contribute to a better understanding of the real world. The inclusion of child psychopathology and environmental psychology is a unique addition to the curriculum. After selecting a major, students can also choose one of five disciplined focuses to further enrich studies including, developmental psychology, experimental, applied, social, and personality/abnormal psychology. Students have the opportunity to utilize the research labs and host their own research projects and studies. A minor in psychology can also be obtained.
A B.S in Psychology requires the fulfillment of a core curriculum with common prerequisites such as Human Biology, Introduction to Psychology, Human Growth & Development, and Introduction to Community Psychology. Once those credits are completed, students can take courses such as Childhood Psychopathology, Child Behavior Problems, and Theories of Personality. Students interested in an EdS in School Psychology can participate in programs offered by the Department of Counseling, Recreation, and School Psychology. With an M.S. in Counselor Education, students can choose to focus on specific tracks. This includes:

- M.S. in Counselor Education: Rehabilitation Counseling Track
- M.S. in Counselor Education: School Counseling Track
Students who pursue a degree within this program can go on to work within schools, mental health agencies, and other community facilities. Those who successfully graduate from these tracks will be eligible for certification as a national school counselor. Students can choose to take courses in specializations such as Measurement and Appraisal in Counseling, Personality Theories, Group Counseling, Organization and Administration of School Counseling and Counseling Children and Adolescents.
About Florida International University
In 1965, an official Senate Bill was passed for the approval and the green light to begin developing an official state university in Miami. In 1969, Chuck Perry, a founding president, gathered up a group of leaders who assisted in bringing his vision to life. What is now known as FIU’s Ivory Tower started out as the original office space for the culmination of plans for the creation of the university. Butler Waugh, Donald McDowell, and Nick Sileo gathered together with Chuck Perry in the tower and began working on plans. Today, Florida International University is one of the biggest universities in the United States. By 1972, FIU opened its doors. A whopping 5,667 students were enrolled making it the largest opening day in collegiate history. Most students were attending FIU full-time while also maintaining full-time jobs. In 1976, Harold Crosby became president of FIU. By 1977, the North Campus building which is now known as the Biscayne Bay Campus officially opened its doors. In 1985, the first residence hall housed 550 students. From 1986 and beyond, enrollment went from 16,400 students to over 34,000. In 2002, FIU’s College of Law opened and became the first public law school to exist in Southern Florida.

Florida International University received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Three of the programs within the Department of Counseling, Recreation, and School Psychology are nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
Florida International University Application Requirements
First-year undergraduate students must submit an online application, a $30 application fee, official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores of 1539 or 22, and residency documentation. FIU accepts applications on rolling admission. Graduate students should note that specific programs require certain documentation, but in general, students will need satisfactory GRE, GMAT or EXADEP scores, a letter of intent, letters of recommendation, a resume, an entrance interview with a portfolio, a $30 application fee, official transcripts, and residency documentation.
Tuition and Financial Aid
For undergraduate students that are residents of Florida and living on campus, tuition is $23,866. Undergraduate students who live at home, tuition is $17,486 and for students who live off-campus, tuition is $26,202. Non-Florida residents who live on campus have a tuition of $36,264. For those who are living with family members, tuition is $29,884 and for students who will reside off-campus, tuition is $38,600. Graduate students who are residents of Florida and reside at home will have a tuition of $22,502, and those who live off-campus can expect tuition of $34,774. Non-Florida resident graduate students who live with the family will have tuition of $32,330, and those who reside off campus can expect to pay $44,602. Mandatory fees include parking, health, athletics, and other miscellaneous additions. Around 67% of FIU undergraduate students receive financial aid in the form of a grant with the average award totaling $5,301. Students can apply for aid in the form of loans, scholarships, and other grants.
