About University of the Cumberlands

The Williamsburg Institute was founded in 1888 by a group of Baptist ministers in order to prepare young people to be servant leaders. In 1913, Cumberland College was born when Williamsburg Institute acquired Highland College. The name reflected the location along the Cumberland River as well as the school’s proximity to Cumberland Falls and the Cumberland Gap.

Although the original charter intended for the school to be a senior college, it became a junior college in 1918. In 1959, a junior year was added and, in 1961, a senior year, making the school a senior college. The first graduate degree was issued in 1988 and, in 2005, the school became the University of the Cumberlands.

The school was affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Bound by the policies of that organization, the University was granted exemption from Title IX regarding admission of students who did not meet the Baptist views on marriage, sexual orientation, and other social beliefs. In 2018, the University of the Cumberlands received a dissolution with the Kentucky Baptist Convention in order to offer admission to all who wished to attend.

Today, there are 11,696 students attending the University of the Cumberlands. It is a private, faith-based institution.
