Two Psychology Degrees Available at UIW

At Columkille Hall, the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences grants a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology to more than 165 University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals concerned with community mental health. Chaired by Dr. Maria Felix-Ortiz, a Psi Chi Outstanding Teacher Award recipient, the 120-credit, four-year curriculum builds basic behavioral theory understanding in two specialized options: General Psychology or Addiction Prevention. Expect wide-ranging San Antonio courses, such as Lifespan Development, Drug Use Intervention, and Statistics, with an intimate 13:1 learner-faculty ratio. Undergrads can also secure 100-hour internships like Haven for Hope, conduct Child & Adolescent Research Lab projects, join the Psych Society, and semester abroad from Rome to Rio.

Founded in 1996, the School of Professional Studies offers a Master of Arts in Administration (MAA) with five concentration areas, including Industrial & Organizational Psychology, for University of the Incarnate Word post-grads to sharpen specific leadership skills. Directed by Dr. Vincent Porter, this unique 30-credit, SACS-accredited South Texas degree will analyze human behavior in business settings. In an accelerated, eight-week format, the master’s delivers challenging 6000-level courses during evenings in San Antonio or Corpus Christi and online. Addressed topics in the 10-month sequence include Workplace Motivation, Personnel Psychology, Job Assessment, and Organizational Diversity. Individuals who complete at least 500-hour internships, such as Tesoro, Valero, Mondelez International, and Christa Santa Rosa, qualify for the SHRM Certified Professional distinction.

About the University of the Incarnate Word

The University of the Incarnate Word originated in 1869 when Sisters Madeleine Chollet, Pierre Cinquin, and Agnes Buisson arrived in San Antonio from France to treat cholera patients. That year, their Santa Rose Infirmary became the Alamo’s first Catholic hospital. In July 1881, the Sisters of Charity received a Texas State Legislature charter to begin higher education. By 1893, the Incarnate Word School was opened for all-female training at George Brackenridge’s former estate. In 1909, it was renamed the College and Academy of the Incarnate Word. Three years after, it formed a beneficial partnership with the Catholic University of America. In 1969, Incarnate Word built the 78,962-volume Mabee Library. In 1971, Sister Margaret Patrice Slattery adopted a coeducational policy to begin admitting males. Offering master’s degrees since 1974, it was renamed the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996.

Endowed for $132 million, the University of the Incarnate Word now educates 10,226 Cardinals from 70 countries online, on the 154-acre Midtown Brackenridge campus, at five Texas centers, and via 140 sister schools abroad with 100+ clubs like Psi Chi. University of the Incarnate Word Accreditation Details

On January 23, 2014, the University of the Incarnate Word submitted a Quality Enhancement Plan to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to start the Level VI accreditation reaffirmation process through 2024-25 under its ninth president, Dr. Thomas M. Evans, an Outstanding Eagle Scout. Located 995 miles east via Interstate 10 in Decatur, Georgia, this elite 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to review UIW’s over 90 bachelor’s and 20 graduate degrees. Additionally, Incarnate Word was accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) in June 2016.

University of the Incarnate Word Application Requirements

Entering the University of the Incarnate Word is classified “minimally difficult” by Peterson’s since 4,304 of the 4,894 Fall 2017 applicants were selected for 88 percent acceptance. First-year Cardinals flying into the BA in Psychology must be completing high school with at least 16 Carnegie units, including four in English. College-ready GED subject scores or 160 or better would qualify. Freshmen generally rank in the upper half of their classes with an average 3.5 GPA. The middle 50th percentile earn SAT scores of 940-1120. Mid-range admitted ACT scores are 17-23. The Honors Program mandates a 1220 SAT or 26 ACT minimum. College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences transfers need GPAs above 2.5 in 24+ non-remedial credits. International students prove English ability with 650 TOEIC, 6.5 IELTS, 79 TOEFL iBT, 53 PTE, and better scores. MAA in Industrial & Organizational Psychology cohorts must finish a four-year bachelor’s with GPAs over 3.0. The GRE-optional program only considers GPAs of 2.5-2.99 if students have extensive experience.

The University of the Incarnate Word set a priority freshman deadline of February 1st. Bachelor of Arts in Psychology transfers have rolling admission until August 15th for Fall or January 1st for Spring starts. The Honors Program has an April 30th deadline to ensure Sky View Hall housing. Master of Arts in Administration majors apply year-round to begin any eight-week segment. Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, the University of the Incarnate Word is charging full-time BA in Psychology majors $14,950 each term or $29,900 annually. Mandatory undergrad fees are $1,276 each year. The $1,869 health insurance premium can be waived if insured. Residing at the San Antonio campus’ dorms like Agnese/Sosa Hall adds $12,824 for room and board. UIW budgets $1,400 for books yearly. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals $47,269 on-site or $34,445 if commuting. Online undergrad courses are priced $530 per credit. The School of Professional Studies bills MAA in Industrial & Organizational Psychology students $960 per credit or $28,800 total.

Since 1964, the San Antonio Area Foundation has developed 90+ programs like the Beldon Family Scholarship, Loretta Simpson Scholarship, and John Philip Goudge Memorial Scholarship.
