Tulane University
The School of Science and Engineering
Tulane University of Louisiana is a private, research university located in New Orleans. Tulane is a member of the Association of American Universities. The university was established in 1834 as a public medical college, and evolved into a comprehensive university by 1847. In 1884 the school was privatized with significant endowments from Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb. Tulane’s main campus is located in Uptown New Orleans near historic Audubon Park. The campus has come to be known as the Uptown or St. Charles campus, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.
In 2015, US New & World Report ranked Tulane as the 54th best national university. The mission of the Tulane University School of Science and Engineering is to “provide outstanding opportunities for learning and discovery in science and engineering and to foster an environment that is student focused, research intensive, interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial, and responsive to the needs of the community”.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The BS in Psychology degree program offers students a broad-focused training program that covers a variety of topics related to the psychological sciences. The curriculum covers a range of areas including:
- univariate statistics
- experimental psychology
- psychological sciences (laboratory courses)
- psychobiology
- social/developmental psychology
- techniques and applications
All students seeking the undergraduate psychology degree must complete a capstone experience before graduation. This degree program prepares students for either entrance into the workforce or graduate training in psychology or several related fields.
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Early Childhood Education
The BA in psychology and early childhood education requires students to complete a predetermined outline of psychology courses as well as specific education courses. This allows for adequate training in both areas leading to the interdisciplinary degree. It’s offered through the School of Science and Engineering, as is the BS in General Psychology, however the psychology-early childhood education major earns a BA degree, not a BS. This means that students pursuing this major must complete the requirements for a BA degree (as determined by the School of Liberal Arts) rather than the requirements for BS (determined by the School of Science and Engineering).
Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Studies
The Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Studies degree program integrates a traditional major with curriculum covering three tracks areas:
- formal disciplines
- philosophical foundations
- psychology
The major offers basic training in the most current research on:
- mind
- cognition
- language
The program is comprised of 10 courses. Six are mandatory and four are elective courses. A minimum of one elective must be completed in each of the three component track areas. It is possible to complete work in a different, yet relevant discipline as a substitute for one elective course, with prior authorization.
Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience
A BS in Neuroscience degree program offers students the opportunity to complete a multidisciplinary curriculum with a focus on the role of the nervous system in regulating physiological processes. The Neuroscience major integrates several fields of study including:
- psychology
- biology
- chemistry
- physics
- anatomy
- physiology
This unique field combines a wide study area that includes everything cellular and molecular function of brain cells to the regulation of responses in organisms. All full-time Tulane students are eligible to declare Neuroscience as a major, but they should do so before the start of the junior year.

The Department of Psychology
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette) is a coeducational, public, research university located in Lafayette. UL Lafayette has the largest enrollment of all nine campuses of the University of Louisiana System. The school was established as an industrial school, later developing into a four-year university. The university evolved into a national research and doctoral university. It is characterized by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with high research activity. The Lafayette campus confers the only PhD in francophone studies and Louisiana’s only industrial design degree. In 2015, The Princeton Review included the University of Louisiana on the Best 379 College list. In 2014, Washington Monthly ranked the university as the 172nd best National University. The overall mission of the Psychology Department is “to expose students to the breadth and depths of the field of psychology”. Students learn to think critically about psychological issues and to better appreciate the need for scientific inquiry. The faculty works to instill in students a deep gratitude for the tenets of the field of psychology and its applications to individual and social problems.

The College of Business and Social Sciences
The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) is a coeducational public university in Monroe. ULM is a member of the University of Louisiana System. The school was established in 1931 as Ouachita Parish Junior College. Within three years the school evolved into the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University. In 1969, the school gained the right to confer doctoral degrees. In 2015, US News & World Report ranked ULM as the 81st best academic institution in the southern region of the United States. The College of Business and Social Sciences supports a number of undergraduate and graduate training programs in a variety of business, management and social science areas.
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
The BA in Psychology degree program provides students with a generalist arts and sciences education, including course options in many major content areas of psychology. The program gives students the fundamental background and skills required for additional professional or graduate study in Psychology or a related field. Students must complete a minimum of 120 course hours and a written exam during the senior year. The mission of ULM Psychology is to “provide strong and diverse representation of the field of psychology to serve the needs of all elements of the university”.
Fully Online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers a fully online BA in Psychology Degree program. This flexible program is very similar to the traditional BA in Psychology. It offers a strong liberal arts education and includes good preparation for graduate training. One important element that makes ULM’s undergraduate online psychology program unique is courses that represent the modern cutting edge areas of the field. Courses such as Evolutionary Psychology and Positive Psychology are electives that make this program stand out among similar programs. Evolutionary Psychology courses provide students with a basic understanding of why certain behavior patterns exist in humans. The Positive Psychology offerings focus on increasing human potential and improving the quality of life. Students who plan to conduct clinical work or who are looking to improve their own quality of life can benefit from Positive Psychology.

The College of Sciences
The University of New Orleans (UNO) is a mid-sized public university located in New Orleans. UNO is a member institution of the University of Louisiana System and the Urban 13 association. In 2011, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges approved the University of New Orleans to become a part of the University of Louisiana System.
The College of Sciences is comprised of seven departments offering baccalaureate degrees in the natural, physical and computational sciences, and several master’s and doctoral programs. All programs train students with a blend of classroom and laboratory instruction. Xavier University of Louisiana
Name of College or school
Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) is a private, coeducational, liberal arts college with the unique distinction of being the only historically black Roman Catholic institution of higher education in the United States. The school is located in the Gert Town section of New Orleans, Louisiana. XULA was established in 1915 when Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament founded the coeducational secondary school. The high school was in operation until 2013 as Xavier University Preparatory School. In 1925 Xavier University of Louisiana was fully actualized when the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established.
US News & World Report ranked Xavier as the 176th best National Liberal Arts College and the 6th best historically black college or university.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The BS degree program focuses on offering students flexibility, while adhering to the guidelines developed by the American Psychological Association for undergraduate psychology programs. A unique pre-medical specialty is also available for psychology majors who plan to apply to medical or dental school, or who may be considering graduate school programs in biological psychology or neuroscience. There are six full-time faculty devoted to working personally with their student advisees and students to help find the best path for each student. The faculty also work to involve students in their scholarship activities, providing students with a rich academic experience. Psychology students at Xavier come from very diverse backgrounds. Many students are from the New Orleans area or other parts of Louisiana. Students also come from all over the country, as well as Africa and the Caribbean, and from urban, suburban, and rural backgrounds.
