Albizu University at Miami offers several psychology degree programs and options for students with an interest in counseling. Undergrads can earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) in General Psychology or choose one of the available psychology minors. The general program teaches students how to help others and become sensitive to their cultural and ethnic needs. Many graduates work for one of the local schools around Miami or in law enforcement positions.
To help students focus their studies on select subjects, the university offers minors that go along with the psychology program. The cross-cultural studies minor is best for students who want to work with people who belong to different cultures. Those who want to work with children and adolescents can choose the child psychology minor, which focuses on how kids grow and develop. Some of the other minors that psychology majors can choose include forensic psychology, case management studies, health psychology, and gay and lesbian studies. Undergrads can also enroll in the university’s interdisciplinary studies program and choose a concentration in psychology.
The Miami campus offers four graduate programs for psychology majors too. Students earn a Master of Science and can pick from majors such as marriage and family therapy. This program includes both courses and internships that help students meet the requirements to obtain a counseling license in Florida. The mental health counseling program also includes a licensing option and some fieldwork. Students can choose majors in school counseling or industrial and organizational psychology too. The industrial and organizational psychology major looks at how people work and what employers can do to make their jobs easier. Those in the school counseling program do internships in Miami schools as they learn what students need from their counselors.
Students can also earn a Doctor of Psychology or a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from Albizu University at Miami. The Ph.D. program started in 2015 and features opportunities for students to do research in psychology and to create dissertations that they can publish. In the Doctor of Psychology program, students also study clinical psychology. More than 90 percent of the students in the program do their internships at sites approved and connected to the American Psychological Association (APA).
About Albizu University at Miami
Albizu University at Miami is a branch of Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Carlos Albizu – Miranda opened an institute in Puerto Rico for students who wanted to study psychology. This campus opened in 1966 and primarily offered programs for graduate students. The main campus is in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A second branch opened in Miami and became known as the Albizu University at Miami.
It added The Goodman Psychological Services Center in 1980 to offer practical opportunities for psychology majors. This center offers affordable mental health care for those with limited incomes in the Miami area. Many of the students attending the university work in the center for course credit and to gain experience handling the needs of private clients. The center partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and a local community center. Eight students receive internships to work for those partners every year. Students attending the Miami campus also have the chance to take classes and spend a semester abroad at one of the two Albizu University campuses in Puerto Rico too.
Albizu University at Miami Accreditation Details
The Miami campus of Albizu University has different accreditation than the other campuses do. It has regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE accreditation means that Albizu can both accept transfer credits from incoming students and provide them with financial aid packages when they use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The doctoral programs in psychology also have accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA).
Albizu University at Miami Application Requirements
Undergrads applying to the university must meet all admissions requirements first. Those requirements include a high school grade point average of 2.0 or higher and a sealed transcript from the student’s school. Students can submit a GED certificate or transcript instead. They need to pay a $25 application fee and submit the online application before sending in their transcripts. Albizu also requires that students submit proof of their identities before they can enroll. Students can submit a birth certificate or a copy of a state-issued ID such as a driver’s license.
The application fee for graduate students is $50. Students can use the accounts they set up to apply to pay the fee. They will also need to submit a sealed transcript that has the seal of the college or university on it and shows that the student has a bachelor’s degree. Albizu asks for three letters of recommendation from professionals who worked with students in the field or the classroom. The university gives priority to those with a GPA above 3.0 and those who submit at least one letter from someone familiar with their clinical work. They must also provide a statement of purpose. Tuition and Financial Aid
At Albizu University at Miami, undergrads pay $323 per credit hour for any classes that they take. The cost rises to $650 per credit hour for students in a graduate program. In the industrial and organizational psychology program, students pay only $620 per credit hour. Doctoral students in either of the two psychology programs pay $825 per credit hour for their classes. These are the prices charged by the university before the student receives financial aid.
Financial aid packages are available for those who submit the FAFSA when they apply to Albizu. The type of aid they get depends on their school status and how many credits they take. Undergrads can get university scholarships as well as subsidized student loans and federal grants. They can also use work-study.
