About Angelo State University

Angelo State University is a public university formerly known as San Angelo College. Established in 1928, it served as a junior college during its early years and had a curriculum filled with two-year degree programs. It became Angelo State College in the 1960s due to the need for a four-year college in the state. Though it continued offering some two-year programs, the college dropped those programs after gaining university status near the end of the decade. That also led to it becoming Angelo State University and adopting the nicknames Angelo State and ASU. U.S. News and World Report added ASU to its list of the top 10 regional up and coming schools, and The Princeton Review named it one of the best undergraduate schools in the nation. The university also ranks as one of the best options for veterans and online students because of the distance education programs it offers that require no on-campus work.

Angelo State University Accreditation Details

As Angelo State has regional accreditation, it can evaluate the transcripts that students bring with them and give them credit for their past work. It is also the reason why any student attending the university can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the best way for students to get financial aid. That accreditation comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and that organization’s Commission on Colleges (COC).

Angelo State University Application Requirements

Incoming Angelo State students can transfer credits to the university or apply as a recent high school graduate. The university requires that students have a minimum ACT/SAT score if they ranked in the top 50 to 75% of their high school classes, but it does not have a minimum score for those who finished in the top 25%. All prospective freshmen must provide a test score and an ASU application and pay the application fee. Students who did not graduate from a Texas high school also need to submit their official transcripts.

The requirements for graduate students include a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in college and a strong background in either counseling or psychology. ASU requires three letters of recommendation and has a form that students need to have their references complete and submit. They must also write an essay and submit their transcripts as well as the graduate school application, which has an attached fee. Students with a lower GPA can submit a GRE score too. The deadline for these programs is July 15.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergrads pay $9,130 every year to live on the ASU campus, but freshmen and other undergrads also have the choice of living at home with their families. The cost of attending the university is $8,720 per year for Texas residents and $21,170 each year for nonresidents. ASU scholarships are available for undergrads based on their merit and/or need. Only those accepted into one of the university’s degree programs can qualify for scholarships. Students will use their application accounts to apply for their scholarships. They can also use the FAFSA to get grants and other types of aid.

Graduate students at ASU pay $6,860 each year as a Texas resident and $14,330 per year as a nonresident. Room and board are available for students who want to live on-campus for an extra $9,130 each year. The best way for graduate students to pay their tuition and fees is through one of the employment opportunities offered by ASU. There are six graduate, two research and three teaching assistant positions available each year. Students need to apply by March first for one of these positions. Those hired receive tuition waivers as well as stipends. Graduate students can also get unsubsidized loans through the FAFSA. Angelo State University encourages students to apply for both federal and institutional financial aid when applying to a psychology or counseling degree program.
