The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Hartford incorporates the most up-to-date learning goals based on those established by the American Psychological Association. The program provides a basic knowledge in psychology, scientific inquiry and critical thinking, ethical and social responsibility, communication and professional development. The program requires 38 credit hours in addition to core courses and electives. The Master of Science in Organizational Psychology at the University of Hartford provides students with a theoretical framework in organizational behavior and improve their research design, collection of data, analysis of data, communication along with the management of interpersonal, group and organizational issues. Students may select an internship track that requires 11 courses plus a practicum course. The Capstone track requires 11 courses plus a three-credit capstone course.

The Master of Science with a 6th year certificate in School Psychology is a full-time, three-year program. The program prepares school psychologists to work with children, families and educational systems. The program prepares individuals to work in primary roles to maximize learning and development opportunities for children. Students are able to assess, diagnose and counsel children as well as to perform psychotherapy, consultation, and collaboration.

The Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology prepares students for careers as clinical psychologists who are skilled in the delivery of direct services. Students are able to consult with human service agencies and are knowledgeable about empirical and theoretical developments. They are also capable of designing and critically evaluating clinical services as well as accept leadership positions in clinical settings. Students may choose to study a Child and Adolescent Proficiency Track that provides additional practicum experience with children and adolescents. Students must complete a dissertation and practitioner training.

About University of Hartford

The roots of the University of Hartford go back to the Hartford School for Decorative Arts which opened in 1877, founded by Olivia Clemens, Elizabeth Colt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Bushnell Cheney and Susan Warner who were all prominent businesswomen. Soon after, Moshe Paranov and Julius Hartt, music educators, established the Hartt School of Music. After the Civil War, Charles Tudor Hillyer founded Hillyer College when he began teaching classes at the YMCA in Hartford. In 1952, the Ward School of Electronics was gifted to the Hillyer School by Samuel I. Ward to train technicians for a new technology – television.

In 1957, the three schools merged on a 150-acre stretch of farmland known as the Gabriel Farm, creating a new university designed as a commuter school in 1957 immediately after World War II when soldiers returned to take advantage of the GI Bill. The leaders of Hartford realized there was a need for a university and created three small schools that were housed in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and the Hartford YMCA.

From the beginning, the school focused on electronics, engineering, technology and education along with programs in music, the visual arts as well as the arts and sciences. Today, the University of Hartford is well-known for visual and performing arts, engineering and business. All students are provided mentoring and learn in small classes.

The school has always been coeducational and students have been able to attend regardless of background. With the offering of online programs, the school has gone beyond its mission to educate members of the Hartford community and now provides programs globally.

University of Hartford Application Requirements

In order to apply to the Master of Science in Organizational Psychology must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended with one showing the conferring of a bachelor’s degree or higher. A letter of intent is required along with three letters of recommendation.

Approximately 20 to 25 full-time students are admitted to the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology each year. They must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended with one showing the conferring of a master’s degree or higher. They must provide official GRE or GMAT scores and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a psychology GPA of 3.25. Applicants must provide a current resume and a statement of their professional goals. They must also provide an essay that describes their life experiences and three letters of reference. Applicants must also submit to a personal interview.

University of Hartford Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate tuition is $39,220 per year and for master’s level programs is $5,472 per year. Tuition for the Doctor of Clinical Psychology is $28,115 per year.

Financial aid is available and undergraduate students may be eligible for grants, scholarships or loans to cover the cost of tuition. On campus students may also be offered work-study programs. Graduate students may be offered assistantships or fellowships to cover the cost of tuition. They may also be offered loans. Students may seek grants or scholarships as well. All students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
