The Department of Ministry offers a Bachelor of Science in Care and Counseling. The program expands knowledge of counseling theories and therapeutic counseling abilities. It prepares students for master’s level education to pursue licensure and certification in counseling. Students must complete at least 124 credit hours. The courses in the Care and Counseling concentration include Ministering to Families Across the Life Span, Marriage and Family Living, Family Communication, Theories of Counseling, and Abnormal Psychology.

A Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree is available and it requires a total of 124 credit hours for completion. The core courses include Introductory Psychology, Orientation to Psychology, Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, Research Methods, and Abnormal Psychology. Students are able to concentrate on a certain area including art, child and adolescent development, communication, counseling, English, foreign language, intercultural, law, leadership and management, natural science, social justice, and wilderness counseling.

The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students for professional certification. Students must complete 64 credit hours for the degree. The core courses include Principles of Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Career Development Information and Vocational Education, Introduction to Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Crisis Counseling, Addictions, Advanced Psychopharmacology, and Professional Development and Ethics. Students also have the ability to pursue both a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a hybrid Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. This option requires the completion of 79 credit hours. The Marriage and Family Therapy courses include Principles of Family Therapy, Family Systems, Principles of Marital Therapy, Family Sexuality, Relationship Assessment, Advanced Psychopharmacology, Child and Adolescent Counseling, Professional Development and Ethics, and Brief Therapy.

A Master of Education in School Counseling prepares students for school counseling positions in various settings. A total of 49 credit hours are needed for completion of the program.

John Brown University is a private, interdenominational university residing in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Dr. John E. Brown Sr. founded John Brown College in 1919 to blend Christian liberal arts instruction with a focus on specialized vocational education. The hope of the founder was to provide tuition-free education. He states the focus should be equally distributed between head, heart, and hands. In 1934, the school began to offer four-year bachelor’s degrees in engineering, construction, agriculture, education, the sciences, and television broadcasting.
