The program is available on campus, online or in a hybrid version.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program at National University is available online, on-campus or in a hybrid format. The program provides a comprehensive introduction to the contemporary discipline of psychology. Graduates have found positions in criminal justice, journalism, vocational counseling and other careers where an understanding of psychology is beneficial. Graduates are able to articulate major theories, concepts and historical trends while explaining behavior, cognition and emotion using multiple schools of thought and multicultural perspectives. They are able to identify a psychological problem, analyze assumptions and apply research methods to solve that problem. The program provides a comprehensive instruction into the modern and growing field of psychology. Students explore the reasons individuals participate in physical activity as well as how their emotions and mental state may impact their athletic ability. Graduates are able to discuss current trends in psychological research in both individual and team contexts as well as analyze how psychological factors influence performance. The program is available both on-campus and online.

Undergraduate Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Abuse

National University offers an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate designed to meet the California requirements to be certified as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor. The program is approved by the CA Foundation for Advancement of Addiction Professionals. Students are able to establish professional relationships with diverse clients who are dealing with dependency issues. They are able to demonstrate entry-level counseling skills while working with individuals, groups, families, and communities. The program provides an understanding of the DSM IV-TR alcohol and drug abuse dependence criteria as well as methods for developing a treatment plan based on biopsychosocial assessments. The program is available on-campus and online but online students should check with their state regulating agency to be sure it meets licensing criteria.

Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology is designed for those who wish to help individuals, couples, families, and others in psychotherapy. The program is available with two concentrations:

  • Licensed Professional Therapist – meets the academic requirements for licensing as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of California
  • Marriage and Family Therapy – meets academic requirements for licensing as a Marriage and Family Therapist License in the state of California

Students gain an understanding of the core psychological concepts and therapeutic skills that are the basis for counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health counseling. They are able to demonstrate current professional standards of ethics, values, and laws used by professional psychotherapists and as well as cultural competence in dealing with the mental health needs of people who have diverse backgrounds. The program is available both online and on campus. However, online students should check with their licensing agency to confirm that the program meets the criteria for licensure in their state.

Master of Arts in Performance Psychology

The Master of Arts in Performance Psychology provides students with an understanding of theory, research and techniques used in business, fine arts, military, and combat psychology as well as sport psychology. They gain an understanding of how psychology intersects with performance and provides them with the academic requirements to seek certification by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. Students are able to analyze how psychological factors influence performance as well as how to apply theoretically sound performance enhancement assessments in individuals and teams. Students are also able to apply counseling skills to athletes and clients while acting ethically.

Any student who wishes to apply for an undergraduate program at National University must take the ACCUPLACER mathematics and English evaluation prior to admittance. Applicants must complete an application for admission and provide official high school transcripts. Transfer students with less than 90 quarter or 60 semester credits must also submit official high school transcripts along with official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.

National University Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition at National University is $370 per quarter unit and graduate courses are $430 per quarter unit. All students, even those who do not think they are eligible for financial aid, should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the form must be renewed annually. Undergraduate students may be eligible for grants, scholarships and loans. On-campus students may be offered work-study programs as well. Graduate students may be eligible for private scholarships and loans. On-campus students may be eligible for assistantships and fellowships.
