Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The primary mission of the Department of Psychology is “to provide a strong foundation for graduate work in psychology”. In the BA Degree program students learn the skills necessary for graduate study in psychology as well as for many other areas of graduate study. Upon graduation, students in this program are also ready for a variety of careers not requiring graduate degrees. The BA in Psychology degree offers thorough preparation for entry-level work in many occupations. However, most graduates continue their education to complete graduate work in Psychology or another field. In order to prepare students for graduate coursework, they are required to complete a major research project under the guidance of a faculty member.

UCF College of Sciences

The University of Central Florida, commonly referred to as UCF, is a public research university located in Orlando.  UCF is a member institution of the State University System of Florida. It’s the second-largest university in the United States by enrollment. The university was established by the Florida Legislature in 1963, and opened in 1968 as Florida Technological University. Its mission was training personnel to man the growing U.S. space program at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Florida’s Space Coast. As the academic scope expanded beyond its original focus on engineering and technology, Florida Tech was renamed The University of Central Florida in 1978. Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The BS in Psychology Degree Program offers a broad foundation of knowledge in the discipline of psychology. One of the primary goals of the Department of Psychology is “to educate students to intelligently evaluate psychological information that they are encountered within the real world”. Students learn to understand basic psychology terminology and concepts used in:

  • statistical and research methods
  • physiological psychology
  • history and systems

Graduates will be expected to understand what constitutes scholarly sources and be able to utilize them effectively. All psychology majors are encouraged to participate in experiential learning opportunities such as:

Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a Certificate in Behavioral Forensics

The Behavioral Forensics certificate may be completed along with a BS in Psychology degree program. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of a degree program. The Behavioral Forensics Certificate is an interdisciplinary course of study that focuses on how society works to recognize and deal with various forms of criminal behavior. The certificate exposes students to the practice of psychology within the legal system, including topics such as:

  • competency
  • insanity

This certificate is meant to shape and organize a student’s coursework in this particular area of study. The certificate shows potential graduate schools and employers that students have been exposed to behavioral forensics.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The University of Florida (UF) is an American public land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant research university located in Gainesville. Students in the BS in Psychology program receive a broad, empirically-based liberal arts education. The psychology major is one of the most popular on the University of Florida campus. University of Miami

The College of Arts and Sciences

The University of Miami (UM or simply Miami) is a private, nonsectarian university located in Coral Gables. In 2012, the university had enrollment numbers over 15,000 throughout 12 separate colleges, including:

The Undergraduate Psychology Program enrolls the second largest number of majors throughout the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Psychology strives to provide the following for psychology majors:

  • Introduce students to the psychological and behavioral sciences to help them develop a fundamental knowledge base in the field with emphasis on its scientific nature.
  • Help students develop research skills by providing opportunities for supervised laboratory practice.
  • Provide a curriculum that will help students prepare for graduate school in psychology, the social sciences, or in related fields such as Law or Medicine.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The Psychology Department also offers a BS in Psychology Degree. The strong emphasis on math, science, and statistics better prepares students for graduate studies. Undergraduate participation in research has been promoted by the funding of the summer research program, Psychology Research Initiatives Mentorship Experience (PRIME). About 40 percent of the graduating seniors have participated in research for academic credit.

Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology

The Department of Psychology is a co-sponsor, along with the Department of Biology and the Medical School, of an interdisciplinary Neuroscience major that offers a B.S. in Psychobiology. This pre-medical program has among the highest admission standards of any undergraduate major (1300 SAT, 3.5 G.P.A.), second only to the Medical Scholars. The Department has also received national recognition for its leadership in providing research opportunities for under-represented minorities wishing to pursue careers in the bio-psychological sciences.
