Agnes Scott College is a private liberal arts college in downtown Decatur. The college was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary. In 1890, the name was changed to Agnes Scott Institute to honor the mother of the college’s most notable benefactor, Col. George Washington Scott. The name was changed again to Agnes Scott College in 1906 and is still a thriving women’s college. Agnes Scott enrolls almost 1,000 students each year and works to maintain a student/faculty ratio of 10:1. Eighty-seven percent of the faculty members are full-time professors and all of the tenure-track faculty members hold terminal degrees. In 2014, US News & World Report ranked Agnes Scott University as the 89th best National Liberal Arts College.

Armstrong State University, also referred to as Armstrong and AASU, is a four-year public university and is part of the University System of Georgia.
