Manhattan College
School of Liberal Arts

B.A. in Psychology
Manhattan’s B.A. in Psychology program emphasizes the humanistic aspects of psychological theory to develop liberal arts education and understanding of people’s actions. Students focus on applying empirical-based principles in their personal lives and human services careers. The 30-credit major builds upon core coursework in religion, history, English, math, foreign language, government, and social science. For well-balanced preparation, psychology majors must select courses from five perspectives: clinical, social, cognitive, neuroscience, and developmental psychology. Holding a minimum major GPA of 3.4 will qualify Manhattan College students for joining Psi Chi. Most B.A. students participate in for-credit senior internships, which are abundantly posted on JasperLink. Mission-based internships with Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Rockville Centre are popular. There’s also a January intersession program in Buenos Aires or Venice.
B.S. in Psychology
Firmly rooted in the scientific aspects of human behavior and thought, the B.S. in Psychology program is ideal for developing the research strategies for further academic or clinical training. Manhattan students are trained to analyze, evaluate, and apply psychological literature in a manner that promotes well-being from a Catholic worldview. If desired, students can add an Industrial/Organizational Psychology Concentration to the 33-credit major. Unlike the B.A., the Bachelor of Science has intensive natural science requirements. Students will study biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, and statistics before the psychology core. Devoting at least one semester to hands-on research is mandatory. Some B.S. majors even obtain part-time research assistant positions at Columbia and NYU. The School helps students present their independent research at the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) Conference.

Through Manhattaville’s APPEAL program, the Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Studies is delivered in an accelerated, degree-completion format for busy working professionals. The liberal arts curriculum develops essential knowledge in psychology, sociology, religion, communications, and the sciences. Holding an associate degree from a regionally accredited college is required for entry. Up to 75 credits may be transferred into the program’s 120-credit curriculum. Students can even apply for life experience and CLEP credits. Accelerated coursework is available on-campus during afternoons and evenings. Topics addressed will span from psychopathology to human development and family dynamics. B.S. students must complete a final behavioral studies integration project. There’s also a Joint M.A. in Teaching Program.

Established in 1905 as the Catholic Religious Institute of Brothers, Marist College is a private, co-educational liberal arts institution serving over 5,200 students from its main 240-acre suburban campus in Poughkeepsie overlooking the Hudson River and international center in Florence, Italy. B.A. in Psychology
At Marist College, there’s a traditional, on-site B.A. in Psychology program available to introduce the fundamental concepts and theoretical perspectives on human behavior for being socially responsible in today’s multicultural world. Students develop a mental health awareness that’s essential for entry-level psychology employment and advanced education. After the first-year seminar, students progress through 120 total credits, including 41 credits of electives. These free courses can be concentrated in Developmental, Biological, Sociocultural, Cognition, or Clinical/School psychology. Spring of junior year is an excellent time to travel abroad for the Marist in Italy program. B.A. students must complete at least 250 hours of applied fieldwork in the Mid-Huston River Valley. Also consider the dual major in criminal justice.
Online B.A. in Liberal Studies with Psychology Concentration
The Finish@Marist online program also offers a B.A. in Liberal Studies with Psychology Concentration for non-traditional, military, and continuing education students wanting to finish their undergraduate degree. The virtual classroom allows working adults to fit the 18-credit liberal studies core and 45-credit concentration within their own schedule. Up to 51 electives can be transferred with prior learning. Online courses conveniently offer 15-week or accelerated 10-week sessions. Some electives may require a hybrid format with minimal trips to Poughkeepsie. Coursework will cover topics like personality, human development, child/adolescent psychology, and industrial psychology. Even better, online Marist students earn a discount of $625 per credit. Admissions requires a high school diploma or GED and be 22 years old or above.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Marymount Manhattan College’s Department of Psychology grants a Bachelor of Arts degree for undergraduates who wish to learn traditional and emerging research-based theories about neurological factors shaping how humans interact. The 34-credit major begins after students have completed the 42 required credits of general education core. Coursework progresses into cognitive processes, statistics, perception, behavioral neuroscience, animal behavior, health psychology, personality, abnormal psychology, and more. Psychology (B.A.)
Available only a Medaille’s Buffalo campus, the Psychology (B.A.) program teaches students how the brain works to better understand human behavior and create effective rehabilitation plans that improve functioning. Students typically use the Bachelor of Arts to springboard into practice-oriented graduate study for counseling, marital therapy, clinical psychology, or social work. Building professional connections is prioritized, so Medaille requires completing at least one internship. Psychology (B.A.)

Requiring 120 credits, the curriculum is supremely flexible with over 50 different psychology electives to choose from. Courses like abnormal psychology, personality, health psychology, psychometric testing, child development, and social psychology are suggested for graduate school. For applied fieldwork, B.A. majors complete a cooperative education placement at affiliated hospitals and clinics. Students can also engage in grant-funded studies through the Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions. If desired, there’s a B.A. track for becoming a Credentialing Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC-T).
Behavioral Science (B.S.)
Psychology majors looking for a broader, multidisciplinary program should consider the Behavioral Science (B.S.) available at Mercy College. The 120-credit curriculum includes a flexible major consisting of just four required courses and eight electives. Study is perfectly aligned with career interests thanks to concentrations in Community Health, Gerontology, and Health Services Management. Coursework is delivered at all Mercy campuses and wholly online through a web-enhanced classroom. Students focus on developing practical insights about how individuals behave for various occupations. A maximum of 75 credits can be transferred for accelerated learning. Mercy encourages B.S. majors to complete credit-earning laboratory work and/or NYC internships. Great emphasis is placed on studying interpersonal relationships to foster individual growth in families and larger groups. The 120-credit curriculum includes courses like child psychology, sociology, substance abuse, gerontology, community violence, social work, abnormal psychology, and human behavior. The practice-oriented program mandates two agency-based field practica. Alumni have interned at placements like Newburgh Healthy Families, Unity House, USMA Child Development Center, and NYS Department of Mental Health. International internships are available via CIS Learning Abroad in 14 different countries.
Counseling/Psychology 3+2 Program
In partnership with Pace University’s CACREP-accredited Dyson College of Arts & Sciences, the Counseling/Psychology 3+2 Program is available for MSMC undergraduates. Students spend their first three years earning the Bachelor of Arts before attending Pace for a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling in Pleasantville. Entry will require 78 credits with a minimum major GPA of 3.3. Over five years full-time, students satisfy the qualifications for New York State counseling licensure, including CASAC credentials. Emphases are available for Grief Counseling, Drug Addictions, Post-Traumatic Stress, and Positive Psychology. The master’s curriculum features two three-credit field internships across New York City. Students also obtain clinical training at Pace’s on-campus Counseling Center.
