Bachelor of Science in Psychology
Students in the undergraduate Psychology Department at Boise state learn early in their academic career that the main focus of study is Psychological Science. Brigham Young University – Idaho Campus
The Department of Psychology
Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU–I) is a private university located in Rexburg. Founded in 1888, the school is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Originally a junior college, the school transitioned to a four-year institution in 2001. BYU-Idaho is broadly organized into six colleges. and Its parent organization, the Church Educational System, sponsors sister schools in Utah and Hawaii. The university’s primary focus is on undergraduate education, offering several associate and over 70 bachelor’s degree programs. All students enrolled at BYU are required to adhere to a strict honor code, which mandates behavior in line with LDS teachings:
- academic honesty
- adherence to dress and grooming standards
- abstinence from extramarital sex and from the consumption of drugs and alcohol
Almost all of the students are members of the LDS Church, and a significant percentage of the student body take a hiatus from their studies to serve as missionaries. The tuition rate is considerably less expensive than similar private universities, due to significant funding by LDS Church funds. In 2014 US News & World Report ranked BYU-I as the 11th best university in the Western Region of the United States.
The purpose of the BYU-Idaho Psychology program is “to use the study of behavior, mental states and processes to provide students with an opportunity to evaluate and modify their own behavior and goals in the light of LDS standards and psychological principles”. The curriculum was created to ensure that students develop “a foundation for further psychology inquiry, enhance their understanding of the relationship of psychology to other disciplines, and provide means by which the principles of psychology can be used to improve life and give more meaningful service to others.”
Bachelor of Science in Psychology with an Emphasis in General Psychology
Students pursuing General Psychology will be exposed to a variety of topics relevant to the study and practice of psychology. Students will develop a strong framework for further study in the field. An internship is one of the ways that psychology majors can further develop their skills and knowledge. Some of the details regarding all internships in the BYU-I Psychology department include:
- Internships are electives, they are not required
- Students are allowed only one internship
- Students are required to have Junior or Senior status
- Internships are 1-3 credits
- A minimum of 75 hours service required for each credit hour
Bachelor of Science in Psychology with an Emphasis in Industrial/Organizational Psychology
One of the sub-fields of psychology that is seeing the highest growth is Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology. This area of emphasis allows students to begin their study in a growing field. The curriculum in this emphasis covers both a range of core psychology courses as well as a number of “Emphasis Courses” that outline the details relevant to a career as an I/O Psychologist. Idaho State University (ISU) is a four-year research university located in Pocatello with satellite locations in Meridian, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls.
