Hamilton College
Department of Psychology
Founded in 1793 by Presbyterian Reverend Samuel Kirkland, Hamilton College has evolved into a private, co-educational non-sectarian liberal arts institution serving around 1,850 undergraduates from its vast 1,300-acre rural campus in Clinton just nine miles from Utica. B.S. in Psychology
Hamilton’s B.S. in Psychology program introduces undergraduates to the scientific method for determining how biological, social, and psychological factors influence the human condition. In the state-of-the-art Science Center, majors are required to complete at least one science-intensive lab course and two semesters of empirical research. The 120-credit curriculum covers essential scientific analysis methods for studying mental processes from multiple perspectives, including clinical psychology. B.S. students can apply their skills in semester-long, co-operative placements like the New England Center for Children, Utica-Marcy Psychiatric Institution, or Saint Elizabeth Medical Center. Every psychology major must complete and orally defend a senior capstone project. Those who excel could win the Department’s B.F. Skinner Award or Jonathan Marder Prize.
B.S. in Psychology with Concentration in Neuroscience
For greater insights into the body’s most complex organ, the B.S. in Psychology program at Hamilton College allows an Interdisciplinary Concentration in Neuroscience. This research-oriented track focuses on studying how the brain and central nervous system govern the nature of behavior. Students draw knowledge from psychology as well as biology, chemistry, chemistry, and neuropsychology for hands-on research. First established in 1976, this is one of the nation’s oldest undergraduate concentrations for neuroscience. Concentrators access up-to-date laboratory facilities, including a 1,000-square foot vivarium. The 36-credit concentration requires undertaking an IRB-approved research project with two faculty members. High-achieving scholars could be selected for Hamilton’s Senior Fellowship Program.

Endowed for $6.3 million, Hilbert College is a private, non-profit Roman Catholic and Franciscan liberal arts institution founded in 1957 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph and educating around 1,100 co-eds yearly. As New York’s only CORE-accredited undergraduate program, the curriculum allows students to specialize in serving people in community agencies. The program offers six customized concentrations: Substance Abuse/Chemical Dependency, Human Services/Law, Child and Family Practice, Family Violence, and Disability Rehabilitation. The four-year sequence includes two field placements over three semesters. Students select from over 50 partnering internship sites, including Erie ARC and Erie County Social Services Department. Whether taking courses during daytime or evening hours, majors can also join Hilbert’s student-led Human Services Association.

For more in-depth, research-based training in experimental science, undergraduates should pursue the Psychology Major (B.S.) from Hobart William Smith College. Closely following the APA’s guidelines, the scientific program delves deeper into conducting psychological research with five additional courses in natural sciences. The 16-course major requires B.S. students gain hands-on research experience in Gulick Hall’s state-of-the-art research labs and three microcomputer labs. Each semester, students congregate to share findings in the on-campus Psychology Colloquium. HWS’ psychology faculty hold doctorates in various sub-specialties for diverse research participation. Students ranking in the top 35 percent of their class can join the Psi Chi Honor Society. Alumni have been accepted at prestigious colleges like Georgetown, Harvard, Columbia, and Syracuse.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Hofstra’s Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program trains undergraduates to think critically about behavioral research, clearly communicate, and reason using the scientific method. Consisting of 33 semester hours, the major prepares students for graduate study or human services employment. Coursework will delve into topics like cognition, animal learning, I/O psychology, human development, and abnormal psychology. For specialization, students could declare an interdisciplinary minor in neuroscience or cognitive science. B.A. majors work with Hofstra’s 30 full-time psychologists to complete a senior capstone. This requirement could be research, honors thesis, or externship. Graduation requires passing the ETS Major Field Test in psychology.
Dual Psychology (B.A.) and Counseling (M.S.Ed.) Program
Requiring 148 semester hours, the Dual Psychology (B.A.) and Counseling (M.S.Ed.) Program offers an accelerated pathway for undergraduates to obtain two degrees within five years full-time, including some summer sessions. Admission will require a minimum 3.5 GPA in psychology courses and three reference letters. Students begin professional counselor preparation in their senior year to obtain the LPC credential. Hofstra University has specialized tracks for Community Counseling, School Counseling, or College Student Development Counseling. There’s also a School Counselor Bilingual Extension. Before the culminating internship, students gain experience in the Counseling and Mental Health Professions Clinic. Applied Psychology Major (B.S.)
Undergraduates with diverse occupational pursuits can earn the Applied Psychology Major (B.S.) to develop their knowledge of how people act, think, and feel. Along with a traditional liberal arts education, the four-year program studies professional practices that are applicable to virtually all careers. Coursework in the 62-credit major will examine economics, business law, marketing, organizational behavior, human development, personality, cognition, neuroscience, consumer behavior, family dynamics, exercise psychology, and more.
